Over $120,000 and counting: IBikeIBuy business case at #YOWInsights conference

You are here

On Friday May 5, Ottawa Councillor Jeff Leiper and Brandbot Digital Marketing Founder David Hicks will present an IBikeIBuy update to the #YOWInsights Business Summit in Ottawa.

IBikeIBuy.ca is a crowdsourced dataset tracking spending by cyclists when they shop in their community. Packaged as an iOS and Android app and website, the tool has seen over 700 users log over $120,000 in spending at over 500 locations since its launch in 2015.

David and Jeff will present the project’s genesis and continuing evolution, as well as the opportunities and challenges of promoting and marketing its use.

Born of a weekend Twitter challenge, the app has grown into a powerful tool that provides insights into where cyclists shop, what they buy, and how much they spend. For example, as of writing, cyclists reported over 1,100 transactions at food stores, with an average spend of $33. The average spend across all categories including restaurant/cafe, retail, food/grocery, entertainment, bars, health & wellness and services when shopping by bike so far is $47.

Recently, the dataset was added to the website to enable researchers, policy-makers and merchants to analyze the trends, including transactions by location, category, time and more in one spreadsheet.

The #YOWInsights Business Summit brings together top business minds in the area and beyond to provide tangible education and fun business networking opportunities. The #YOWInsights’ fourth edition is Friday, May 5 and will be centered around the theme of "Innovation".
