(over the West transitway)

Contract No. ISD17-5015

CONSTRUCTION AND

TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE

July 2018

Dear Resident,

Beginning in August, the City of Ottawa will begin construction work in your neighbourhood. This work is being completed to provide structural and surface repairs to the Churchill Bridge and Athlone Bridge over the West Transitway.

WHO:        The City of Ottawa contractor, Louis W. Bray Construction, will complete the work.

WHY:        This work is being carried out ahead of the upcoming LRT work.  Work on the Churchill Bridge will include structural repairs, road resurfacing, some sidewalk repairs and replacement of the guide rail on the north-west corner.

Work on the Athlone Bridge will include road resurfacing and some sidewalk repairs.

WHAT:      The structural repairs on the Churchill Bridge will be conducted from within the transitway.  The surface repairs on both bridges will include new asphalt on the driving surface and some concrete sidewalk repairs.

WHEN:     Construction will be carried out from beginning of August to end of September 2018.  Surface work affecting traffic on both bridges will be completed for beginning of September.

Construction on the Churchill span will occur during the week. One lane will remain open in each direction during rush hour.  Traffic will be reduced to one lane (with flagging) outside rush hour.

Construction on the Athlone Span will be weekend only. Work will start at 7 am Saturdays and 9 am Sundays and Holidays (as per City noise bylaws). The bridge will be closed to bus traffic during those times.

WHERE:   Construction on the Churchill Bridge will take place on the driving surface as well as within the transitway.  Construction on the Athlone Bridge will be concentrated on the driving surface.

Accessibility

Accessibility is an important consideration for the City of Ottawa. Provisions to accommodate pedestrian and cyclists during construction are an integral part of the project. If you require special accommodation, please contact the undersigned.

Traffic

During the course of construction, impacts to traffic will occur as follows:

  • Churchill Bridge will be reduced to one-lane during off-peak hours (Monday to Friday, 9am – 3pm)
  • Athlone Bridge will be completely closed during all weekends in August.  Bus access to the Westboro station will be rerouted to the Tweedsmuir Bridge.  Bus stops will be unaffected.

Construction Disruptions

The Contractor will make every effort to minimize disruptions, dust, vibrations and inconvenience but as you can appreciate, some of these things will occur during the course of the work.
